Students in the ESL Center
ESL (English as a Second Language) Centers

Clear communication is one of the most obvious needs for society and our world to live in peace. Since English is currently the world's lingua franca, most students see it as crucial to have a firm grasp of the English language in order to secure a higher paying job as well as be influential in society. While we have no desire to diminish indigenous language and culture from the places that we work, we do want to help people achieve their goals as well as promote clear and healthy communication between the many diverse people and cultures of this world.

In Bosnia we are offering English classes through the local schools in the villages for adults as well as children. When we asked families about their needs, almost unanimously, parents say that they want to provide a chance for their children to learn skills that will help them have a bright future. We have been running various ESL programs for some time now and this past year we have worked with the US Embassy in Kabul to put together a center that focuses on promising high school students. The following is an outline of the program we have been running this year.

Our Vision

Our desire is to provide a high quality, intensive English program that will significantly improve high school students' English, preparing them for higher paying jobs within Afghanistan, or possibly the opportunity to study abroad.

Our vision is to provide a center for language learning that would use a variety of methods including the latest computer language learning software (Rosetta Stone), media (books and video), and conversational classes led by native English speakers. While class time is a central focus, we also want to provide a casual atmosphere before and after class which will encourage students to study extra materials in our resource center as well as enjoy conversational opportunities with other students and native English speaking teachers.

Students

Most of our students are high school level students who have demonstrated the potential to be among the future leaders in their community. Our desire has been to find students without consideration of financial capabilities or location within Kabul city limits. To this point we have consistently had around 30 full time students. .

Program

As stated above, our approach to language teaching is to use multiple methods in order to enhance and accelerate students' learning. Students are scheduled to come three times a week for two hour sessions. The classes include the following components:

1. Computer Time:
We have found Rosetta Stone to be the most effective language learning software available. It is an excellent program used by the Peace Corp and the US State Department to effectively teach students through a measurable, systematic structure. We use all three levels of the program, taking students from a beginning level upwards. We also use our internet capabilities to give further language learning through web exercises. (As a side note, students also benefit in acquiring various computer skills).

2. Conversational Class Time:
These sessions are led by our native English speaking teachers and correlate with the Rosetta Stone program. In this time our goal is to lead language learning exercises including vocabulary and pronunciation drills, with conversational topics that challenge the students to speak as much as possible.

3. Resource Center Time:
Our Resource Center includes books, magazines, games and video curriculum which allows students to complete homework assignments and do further study in order to grow in their language proficiency.
