Kabul University Partnership

Although it has numerous trees and is visibly one of the most lively places in Kabul, the Soviet invasion, civil war and Taliban regime had left the facilities desperately broken down and run off most of it's professors. Being located in the middle of the civil fighting in the early 1990's had made it the scene of numerous attrocities, looting and book burning being some of the least of them.

Kabul University is a government run institution located on the west side of Kabul. The College of Medicine was the first higher education faculty and was established in 1932 with 8 freshmen attending the program. Since then it has grown to 14 different colleges with a student population of 7,700 at the end of the 2004 school year.

When members of PBI arrived on campus in January of 2002, two months after the Taliban regime had been run off, there was a faint but hopefull spirit found in the newly installed Chancellor Popal and the few teaching staff that had stuck it out through the dark years. In meeting with the English Department we asked, "How can we help?" The department head Professor Sultani quickly responded with the desperate need for teaching resources and native English speaking teachers. We have endeavored to help in these areas over the past three years, providing part-time EFL teachers as well as a small computer lab for the English Department to be able to generate new teaching materials to meet the influx of new and anxious students.

This past year we were able to provide eight part-time native English teachers who were able to contribute to the teaching of the Freshman Conversational English class in the English Department. All of our teachers are involved in other projects and activities in Kabul, so regretfully we were not able to take on more than just the Freshman class. Our desire was to provide quality and innovative teaching that would challenge the new students of Kabul University to work hard and imagine the possibilities of a much much brighter Afghanistan.

Since we see the students of today as significant contributors of a brighter future for this country, it is our desire to invest in Kabul University as much as possible. The University has just recently installed a new Chancellor, Ashraf Ghani who used to be the Minister of Finance. We are excited and hopeful to continue to work with the Univesity as the students of today become the leaders of tomorrow.
